How to Open a Gold IRA: 7 Steps from Free Kit to Funded Account

To open a gold IRA, you set up a self-directed IRA with a custodian, move retirement money into it, and have a dealer buy eligible metal that ships to a depository. The kit is step zero; the seven steps below take you from the kit on your table to metal on your statement.

Goldco and Augusta pay us when you request information through the buttons above; the other three don't, and we don't link to them. Of the five, only American Hartford Gold publishes a markup range (in its transaction agreement); markup on the metal is usually a larger cost than these account fees. Complaint counts are totals as the BBB lists them; we have no comparable customer numbers for these companies, so complaint rates can't be calculated from them.

The seven steps
  1. 1Read the kit against the terms
  2. 2Take the call, then get it in writing
  3. 3Open the account with the custodian
  4. 4Move the money
  5. 5Choose the metal and fix the price
  6. 6Shipping to the depository
  7. 7Check the first statement

Step 1: Read the kit against the terms

Open the kit and the company’s website side by side. You’re looking for four things: the minimum, the custodian’s fees, the storage arrangement and the buyback terms. Note anything the kit claims that the website doesn’t back up, and anything the website states that the kit leaves out.

The minimum decides whether there is a step 2 at all. Goldco generally asks for $25,000 to roll over; Augusta’s standard minimum purchase is $50,000. Our claim-by-claim checklist walks through a kit page by page, and Gold IRA Companies Ranked shows how other companies’ free kits compare.

Step 2: Take the call, then get it in writing

The representative will want to move quickly from interest to paperwork. Slow it down. Use the call to collect facts: the custodian’s name, the depository, segregated or commingled storage, the markup on each product, the buyback terms.

Then ask for all of it by email. You need the written version for step 5, when you confirm the order, and for step 7, when you check the statement. Our call script lists the questions in order.

Step 3: Open the account with the custodian

A gold IRA is a self-directed IRA held by a custodian that permits physical metal. The dealer usually sends you the custodian’s application; you sign it, name your beneficiaries and agree to the custodian’s fee schedule. On Equity Trust’s published schedule, opening the account costs $50.

Read the custodian’s agreement, not only the dealer’s cover letter. The custodian’s role is narrow. A joint investor alert from the SEC, NASAA and FINRA says self-directed IRA custodians hold and administer the assets, and do not evaluate the quality or legitimacy of what you buy. Checking the purchase is still your job.

Step 4: Move the money

This is the step with tax consequences. The IRS describes two ways to move retirement money: a direct transfer, where your current plan or IRA pays the new IRA, or a distribution paid to you that is deposited in the new IRA within 60 days.

The IRS attaches conditions to the second route. Not every distribution can be rolled over: from an IRA, a required minimum distribution can’t be, and from an employer plan the exceptions include hardship distributions and loans treated as distributions. An employer-plan distribution paid to you is subject to mandatory 20% withholding, even if you plan to roll it over, and rolling over the full amount means making up the withheld part from other money. An IRA distribution paid to you is subject to 10% withholding unless you elect otherwise. A payment that isn’t rolled over is taxable, apart from qualified Roth distributions and amounts already taxed, and may also be subject to the 10% additional tax on early distributions unless an exception applies.

The IRS also limits rollovers from one IRA to another to one in any 12-month period, counting all your IRAs together; trustee-to-trustee transfers are outside that limit. Money in an employer plan such as a 401(k) can usually be rolled to an IRA, but whether you can move it while still employed depends on the plan.

Which route suits your accounts is a question for a tax professional, before any form is signed. The IRS page on rollovers sets out the rules in full, and Gold IRA Companies Ranked describes the gold IRA rollover steps for 401(k) and IRA money.

Step 5: Choose the metal and fix the price

Once the money reaches the custodian, the dealer places the purchase. Before you approve it, compare the order with the email from step 2: product names, quantities, unit prices and the total.

Check eligibility. Under section 408(m), the IRS treats metal bought in an IRA as a collectible unless it meets specific exceptions, and bullion qualifies only when a bank or approved non-bank trustee holds it. Augusta lists examples it treats as eligible, among them the American Gold Eagle and the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf.

Know when the price is fixed. Augusta says it locks the price on a recorded order-confirmation call. Ask any dealer the same question and keep the confirmation. If the order leans towards collector coins, remember the CFTC’s point that numismatic coins typically carry higher markups than bullion and are much less liquid.

Step 6: Shipping to the depository

The metal goes from the dealer to the depository, not to you. Goldco’s terms say it ships 5 to 14 business days after receiving good funds and may take up to 45 business days. Augusta stores accounts at Delaware Depository.

Storage type sets the yearly bill. On Equity Trust’s schedule, non-segregated storage costs $110 a year and segregated storage $160. Segregated means your own coins are kept apart; non-segregated means you own the same type and amount of metal, held alongside other clients’.

Step 7: Check the first statement

The first custodian statement is the proof the account is funded. Goldco’s own guide to reading a precious-metals IRA statement notes that the statement comes from your IRA custodian, not from Goldco.

Lay it next to your order confirmation and check four lines: each product, each quantity, the depository, and the fees charged. From the second year on, expect $235 a year in account fees with Equity Trust and non-segregated storage. Keep the kit, the emails, the order confirmation and the statements together. If something doesn’t match, write to the dealer and the custodian the same day.

For a closer look at one dealer’s full record before you reach this point, Gold IRA Companies Ranked publishes a review of Goldco’s fees and complaints.

Our verdict

None of the seven steps is hard; the risk sits in steps 4 and 5, where money moves and a price gets fixed. Step 4 is governed by IRS rules on rollovers and withholding, which a tax professional can apply to your accounts; step 5 is where having the order in writing, before it is placed, matters most.

To start from a kit, Goldco’s is the one we’d request for accounts of $25,000 and up, because its custodian fees are published and the steps above are easy to check against them. Above $50,000, Augusta names its custodian and depository from the start, which makes steps 3 and 6 simpler to verify.

Questions readers ask

How do I open a gold IRA?

You open a self-directed IRA with a custodian that allows physical metal, move money into it from an existing IRA or employer plan, then buy eligible metal through a dealer, which ships it to a depository. The dealer usually sends the custodian’s forms and coordinates the steps.

Do I open the account with the dealer or with the custodian?

With the custodian. The dealer sells the metal; the custodian legally holds the IRA, sends statements and bills the annual fee. Goldco’s own guide to statements points out that they come from your IRA custodian, not from Goldco.

How long does it take to fund a gold IRA?

It depends on how fast your current provider releases the money and how long shipping takes. Goldco’s terms say it ships 5 to 14 business days after receiving good funds and may take up to 45 business days. Ask each party for its own timeline.

What does a gold IRA cost in its first year?

With Equity Trust as custodian, $50 setup, $125 administration and $110 non-segregated storage make $285 in year one and $235 a year after. Wires, sales and closing the account cost extra, and the dealer’s markup on the metal is separate.

Can I move money from a 401(k) into a gold IRA?

The IRS allows rollovers from employer plans to IRAs, either directly from plan to IRA or as a payment to you that you redeposit within 60 days. A plan payment made to you has 20% withheld, and some kinds of distribution, such as hardship distributions, can’t be rolled over. Whether you can move money while you still work there is up to the plan. How the rules apply to you is a question for a tax professional.

What if my statement doesn’t match my order?

Write to both the dealer and the custodian straight away with your order confirmation attached, and keep copies. If it isn’t resolved, you can complain to the BBB, your state attorney general or the CFTC.
